Because domestic violence crimes vary, the penalties for domestic violence also vary. Penalties will be based on the crime committed, if the defendant has any prior offenses, or if there were any children present when the crime was committed.
The charges could be a misdemeanor or felony with the possibility of jail time, fines, required counseling, or restraining prohibiting the defendant from having contact with his/her victim.
