DUI, Domestic Violence & Sporting Events

Do sporting events, such as football, cause an increase in domestic violence crimes and DUI’s?

There are studies that find this to be true. However, the actual game isn’t responsible for the increase in these crimes but instead the behaviors of the people attending the games or watching the games at a bar or while at home.

During the game, people may be drinking more, their levels of stress may go up and down depending on how the game is going, they may have heightened emotions, they may have money riding on the game and become angry if their team loses, or they might get caught up in the moment and just lash out at the nearest person which is usually a family member.

So, while sporting events don’t cause these crimes, they can inflame the bad behaviors. In essence, the sporting event gives the abuser a reason to justify their abusive behavior.

If you or a loved one is experiencing domestic violence and needs help, please call 1-800-799-7233 or visit online at https://www.thehotline.org/#.

As well as an increase in domestic violence, there is also an increase in DUI’s after a sporting event. Face it, sports and alcohol go hand in hand especially with larger games such as playoff  and the Super Bowl.

While most people aren’t lucky enough to attend a playoff game or the Super Bowl in person, they probably will be attending a party or gathering at a bar to watch the big game. Games generally last for hours which means that a person can drink quite a bit of alcohol during that time. Unfortunately, when one drinks too much alcohol they doesn’t make the best decisions and may choose to drink and drive. This choice could result in an accident, injuries, or death as well as a DUI charge.  We strongly encourage people to use ride share services or designate a driver.  Don’t let that game be your last!
