Active Shooter Response, What To Do?
Whether you are in a new or familiar environment, make sure to be situationally aware. In essence, be aware of what is happening around you, look to see where multiple exits are located, search for areas that could be used as cover, and observe the people around you. By doing this, you can increase your survival rate in the event of a mass shooting incident.
Central Florida Bonding offers these tips on what to do if you are involved in an active shooting situation:
•Run
•Hide
•Fight
In the event of a shooting, try to get to safety. Run, crawl, walk, do whatever is necessary to get away from the shooter. Have your escape plan ready and evacuate. Remember that a door or front exit might not be your best choice. Make sure to run towards a place that is not a dead end. Dead end locations are where there is no other exit located such as in a bathroom.
Leave all of your belongings behind when running. Flee your location even if others elect to stay. Your goal is to get as much distance as possible between you and the active shooter. If you can help others escape, then do so.
If you can’t run from the shooter or you can’t escape the area, then hide. Try and choose a place that isn’t in the view of the shooter. Try and block the door and lock it. Look for a place to hide that offers you another escape route. If you can, turn off the lights, computers, and your phone. Try and remain calm. If you can, call 911 and provide as much information as possible. The last resort is to fight. If you can’t run or hide then fight for your life. Be prepared to fight as aggressively as possible. If you can enlist the help of others, then do so. Have each person assigned to do a different thing such as tackle the shooter, go for the gun, hit the shooter with a weapon such as a chair, fire extinguisher, or scissors. Commit to fighting because your life probably will depend on it.
